CATHETER SECUREMENT

Catheter securement that raises the bar for patient safety.

25% of catheters fail in patients due to infections and other complications. Cathaid came to us with a concept for a catheter securement device that offered improved resistance to infection and an indicator for dangerous positional shifts. Our design simplified the application process, improved the medical seal against infection, increased patient comfort, and re-architected the product to improve manufacturability.

We mapped out the usage sequence and uncovered user difficulties that interfered with proper application. We then constructed new mockups using off-the-shelf materials, which were tested with doctors to validate usability.

The final design uses a breathable polyurethane base that conforms to patient anatomy, creates a medical seal to reduce infection risk, and simplifies application. The catheter shift indicator is achieved through a floating adhesive patch in the cover which bonds to the catheter when the cover is closed. If the catheter shifts position, the floating marker moves out of alignment with the side markers, becoming an obvious visual cue.
